Scholarship for International students

Financial Aid & Scholarships for International students

Funding an education as an international student at a university in the United States can be challenging. International students are ineligible for federal, state, and need-based university financial aid. Only U.S. citizens, eligible non-citizens and AB 540 eligible students can be awarded federal, state and/or institutional need-based financial aid.

We offer the following suggestions to international students:

> Research scholarship opportunities from private organizations both within the U.S. and in your home country. As a suggestion to get started, consider your background, your future or current field of study, and possible career paths. Use these topics to search for organizations that may have some connection to your interests and background, then apply for available grants and scholarships.

> Research the specific department you are interested in by doing a search on the main Berkeley website for their name, and then looking for awards or scholarships they may have for incoming students.

> Graduate students can seek financial assistance from their departments, including Graduate Student Researcher and Graduate Student Instructorships, which are under the direct control of each department. For information about graduate fellowships or outside sources of financial assistance, please contact the Graduate Fellowships Office.

Undergraduate Financial Aid

BIO need-based financial aid is intended only for international students who have the most financial need and who have experienced a significant and unexpected change in their financial situation. Awards are not intended to provide ongoing support and will not cover full tuition and fees.

Application Period

Applications open for about a month at the beginning of each semester, and results are announced about eight weeks later. BIO sends an email to students to announce when an application opens.

Awards are not guaranteed to each applicant, and they are not disbursed until mid-semester, so it’s important that you make alternative arrangements to stay current on your tuition and fees payments. We encourage you to enroll in the Fee Payment Plan or to apply for a short-term emergency loan(link is external) if you need assistance in making your first payment for registration

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to apply for these awards, you must:

> Demonstrate financial need due to a significant and unexpected change in your situation.  Such changes might include loss of financial sponsorship; medical issues; change in family structure; sudden and severe currency devaluation; geo-political events and natural disasters.

> Have completed two consecutive semesters in your current visa status and current program at UC Berkeley prior to the semester in which you are requesting aid. (Summer does not count toward the two-semester requirement.)

> Be a full-time, degree-seeking student at UC Berkeley.

In addition:

Undergraduate students are limited to two semesters of Tuition and Fees Grants, but they may still complete the application every fall in order to be considered for the Need and Merit-based Scholarship.

Types of Awards

> Undergraduate Tuition and Fees Grant (Fall & Spring)

Students can apply for this need-based grant once per semester. It is paid directly toward the tuition and fees balance in the semester that you apply. Grants do not need to be repaid. Undergraduate students may only receive this grant twice.

This grant can only be used to pay eligible tuition and fees charges. These include the following: Tuition; Student Services Fee; Berkeley Campus Fee; Class Pass Fee - Transit; Non-Resident Supplemental Tuition; Instructional Resilience & Enhancement Fee; Health Insurance Fee.  It cannot be applied toward other fees such as UHS service fees, or late payment fees.

To see if you have any eligible unpaid tuition and fees, please log into Cal Central. Click My Finances > View Transactions > Unpaid Balance. Filter by the current semester. Scroll through the list of unpaid items and refer to the list of tuition and fees charges above that a BIO tuition and fees grant can pay.

> Need & Merit-Based Scholarships (Fall only)(collapse)

This scholarship takes into account both financial need and academic achievement. It is awarded in the fall only but is disbursed in two portions: once in fall and once in spring. Scholarships do not need to be repaid. There is no limit to the number of times a student may receive this scholarship. In the fall, when you fill out an Undergraduate Tuition and Fees Grant application, you will automatically be considered for this scholarship as well.

APPLY HERE OR

The Berkeley Undergraduate Scholarship is the University of California’s most historic scholarship program which recognizes the academic merits of undergraduates.

Criteria

New and continuing students who meet the criteria set by the Academic Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Honors and Financial Aid are awarded on the basis of both academic merit and financial need.

> California residents and AB540 eligible students entering from high school with a 4.1 grade point average (GPA) or better

> California residents and AB 540 eligible students entering from a community college entering students with a 3.5 GPA or better

> Continuing students are awarded with a 3.5 GPA or bette

The amount of the scholarship award is based on your level of financial need. Students with financial need and a GPA below the 3.5 threshold are awarded a University Grant.

Viewing Your Scholarship(s)

Your "Berkeley Undergraduate Scholarship" will appear in CalCentral beginning in the spring. Starting in the late summer, the amount of the scholarship will convert to an actual named scholarship award. For example, your $6,000 Berkeley Undergraduate Scholarship may be converted to two different scholarships, like a Campanile Scholarship for $4,500 and a Phoebe Hearst Scholarship for $1,500. The named scholarships should total to the same amount of your initial Berkeley Undergraduate Scholarship award, unless there is a change to your overall eligibility.

2, Fiat Lux Scholarship

The Fiat Lux Scholarship creates opportunities for resilient students with unique life experiences to make a profound impact at the University of California, Berkeley.

Established for high-achieving students from partner high schools in California, the scholarship provides monetary, community, and academic support to UC Berkeley students.

Fiat Lux Scholarship Benefits

> Monetary Award and Scholarship Tenure

Scholars are awarded up to their full financial need based on the California resident student budget, as determined by the UC Berkeley Financial Aid and Scholarships Office. Awards are renewed annually for a maximum of eight semesters, provided the scholar maintains satisfactory academic progress and has continued financial need. Maintaining a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average is encouraged.

> Faculty Mentor

Scholars are matched with a faculty mentor who provides guidance and encouragement on their long-term academic, personal, and professional growth. Mentors are volunteers from the Academic Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Honors, and Financial Aid (CUSHFA) and the faculty at large.

> Fiat Lux Scholars Association (FLSA)

Scholars are automatic members of this student organization that sponsors academic and social activities, community service projects, and outreach events to Fiat Lux Partner schools. Sponsored activities will allow scholars to network with faculty, staff, and their peers in an informal environment.

> Priority Class Enrollment

Scholars receive priority class enrollment starting the second semester of their freshman year.

> Research Fellowship

Scholars have the opportunity to apply for a one-time $1,000 stipend to support research project expenses.

> Financial Aid Advising

Scholars are paired with a dedicated scholarship adviser who provides support and information about scholarships, financial aid, academic advising, and other campus resources. The Undergraduate Scholarships, Prizes, and Honors Office acts as intermediary for Fiat Lux scholars with the Financial Aid and Scholarships Office for financial aid issues.

Eligibility Requirements

Scholarship Candidates are:

> Admitted freshmen who graduated from one of the partner high schools and who attended a partner high school for at least three years

> U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens (California Dream Act Application or hold a permanent resident card)

> California residents or eligible nonresidents (AB 540 nonresident tuition exemption)

> Eligible for need-based financial aid

Selection Process

Candidates are high-achieving eligible admitted freshmen who have attended one of the program’s partner high schools for at least three years.

Students are automatically considered by submitting their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or California Dream Act Application. Candidates are identified on the basis of information supplied in their application for admission and their FAFSA and California Dream Act Application. Only students with financial need are eligible. California residents, eligible nonresidents, U.S. citizens, and eligible noncitizens are considered.

As part of a holistic review process, candidates are invited to a one-on-one interview with a Berkeley faculty member in late March. Interviews are scheduled in early April. Berkeley faculty select scholarship recipients.

Scholars are notified before the May 1 deadline to accept their offer of admission. Scholarship awarding operates under the oversight of the Academic Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Honors, and Financial Aid.
