Who we’re looking for

The Toyota Financial Services Data Engineering team is looking for a passionate and highly motivated, customer-centric leader to oversee the sourcing, transformation, modeling, and delivery of data for consumption by our business partners. This role will lead agile teams aligned to a business domain and will have the opportunity to work closely with those business domains to dig in and deliver data solutions that provide new data capabilities that unlock new business value.    

Manager, Data Engineering will oversee: 

> End to end design of complex data workflows from source to consumption, including operational and analytical data for their business domain. 

> Development of high quality data solutions that meet the needs and expectations of the business while regularly moving the needle forward through innovation. 

> Deployment and automation of Enterprise Data Warehouse, ETL and Data Management processes along with the use of data to create business value. 

> Development of data strategy for the business area they support, including understanding the critical business problems in those business areas, diving into white space areas to identify the appropriate solutions to address those business problems, and defining clear objectives and goals for the team. 

> Alignment with core business areas on the delivery of data for key projects and initiatives. 

This job has supervisory responsibilities for a team of 10+ resources including both team members and contingent/vendor resources. This role will help drive the recruiting activities in their area geared to continue to build up and grow our core team of passionate Toyota Data Engineering team members. 


What you’ll be doing

1.  Strategy, Leadership, and Management  

> Oversee the strategic data priorities of their core business area owned and guide the organization on which data to store, analyze, and exploit for the business’s benefit. 

> Collaborate closely with Enterprise Data Management teams to understand policy and proactively implement changes to our data ecosystem to address data risk and legal requirements 

> Manage Data Warehouse, ETL Design, and development teams 

> Collaborate with the Architecture and Data Tools team to develop a best in class data ecosystem that meets the needs of their core business area 

> Drive tactical alignment of work for their core business area, including work required to complete core initiatives, run the business, innovation, and driving necessary prioritization and trade-off discussions as needed 

> Provide thought leadership on data discovery, metadata management, lineage capture capabilities 

> Drive the governance of TFS’ Data Supply Chain within their area to reduce data-related operational risk through proper management of their business areas data assets 

> Ensure effective documentation for sensitive, protected and shared data to meet compliance needs (i.e. SOX) 

> Facilitate team member development and training opportunities to promote maximum productivity and position the team members for increased responsibilities and job growth 

> Provide ongoing performance feedback/coaching 

> Build a strong high-performing team and the culture to support that performance consistently 


2.  Subject Matter Expert 

> Expert in modern cloud first Data Warehouse Technologies 

> Expertise in Enterprise Data Warehouse, ETL Architecture & Development 

> Knowledge of information technologies, standards, and best practices prevalent in data governance, data quality, and data privacy. Familiarity with data management principles and practices 

> Ability to demonstrate deep understanding how data supports business strategy, and how it is used within business processes, and its impact. Relevant experience in data governance or data quality 

> Provide expertise on systems, market trends, technology directions, and product directions related to data governance and information management tools and capabilities 

> Guide continuous innovation and development of data capabilities 

> Identify and champion the roadmap for new technologies and infrastructure needs for data governance and data management capabilities 

> Ability to bridge business and technical concepts 

> Ability to quickly ramp up on business needs and address those needs over the short, mid, and long-term 


Willingness to dive in and get your hands dirty with hands on coding if needed and model the way as a data engineer 


3. Facilitate Project Planning 

> Participate in workshops and help develop business cases for core areas, processes and technologies 

> Attend and participate (where appropriate) in various project planning and prioritization sessions 

> Guide business areas on long-term project planning and road mapping exercises 


What you bring

> Bachelor’s degree or higher.

> Experience with schema design and dimensional modeling.

> Experience in ETL design, implementation, and maintenance.

> Experience bringing a data infrastructure to the next level including the overhaul of data, pipelines, architecture, and modeling

> Experience with data engineering in the cloud.

> Data profiling/data discovery experience with tools.

> Proven professional experience in leading a team.

> Knowledge of ad-hoc reporting and analytic tools.


Added bonus if you have

> Master’s Degree

> Amazon Web Services Solution Architect and/or Amazon Web Services Professional Certification

> Experience with AWS and the migration of on-prem data to the cloud.

> Exposure to big data concepts (Hadoop, Cloudera, Hortonworks, etc.) and BDE and AWS environments.

> Experience with Cloud Data Warehouse Technologies like Snowflake, Amazon Redshift, etc.

> Experience with code based ETL delivery and design using Python, Scala, or a similar language.

> Experience in SQL and data modelling.
